About the Artist (found online)
Effie Calavaza (b. 1927) was a Zuni Pueblo silversmith and a pioneer for women metal artists. She learned silversmithing from her husband, Juan Calavaza, and her early work was stamped with his hallmark ("JUAN C."). Following his death in 1970, she began signing pieces with her own "EFFIE C." hallmark. In Zuni culture, snakes carry positive symbolism associated with healing, rejuvenation, and transformation. Due to mass counterfeiting of her signature serpent design, Calavaza successfully took her case to the U.S. Supreme Court to legally copyright her work and halt the import of fakes.
